{"id":839,"date":"2015-05-18T14:55:20","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T12:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dieticiansatwork.co.za\/blog\/?p=839"},"modified":"2017-09-12T08:46:18","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T06:46:18","slug":"emotional-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dieticiansatwork.co.za\/blog\/emotional-eating\/","title":{"rendered":"Emotional Eating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The first important thing you need to determine when dealing with emotional or comfort eating is whether you are physically or emotionally hungry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Physical hunger is when our sugar levels are dipping due to poor food choices (high refined carbs) or lack of regular meals (skipping meals).<\/p>\n<p>Usually, emotional eating is a sudden urge for a specific texture, taste or item; it is often triggered by a stressor, habit, social or childhood influence. It leaves us feeling guilty and over-full.<\/p>\n<h3>To assist dealing with emotional eating use the TAKE FIVE rule.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Take 5 minutes to step back and ask yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Why<\/em> do I want to comfort eat?<\/li>\n<li><em>What <\/em>am I avoiding (emotion, stress, boredom)?<\/li>\n<li><em>Accept <\/em>that you are allowed to have different emotions throughout the day \u2013 happiness, sadness, anger, frustration.<\/li>\n<li>Have a list of 5 of your favorite activities (e.g. scrapbooking, drawing, playing an instrument, exercise) available and choose one to do for 5 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Decrease the impact of emotional eating by choosing lower calorie options (popcorn instead of crips; jelly sweets instead of chocolate)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first important thing you need to determine when dealing with emotional or comfort eating is whether you are physically or emotionally hungry.
